FIRST PRESBYTERIAN
CHURCH Clinging to the steep, oak-clad hills of Sausalito, this century-old church is a warm, intimate place to worship. Its redwood shingle exterior blends effortlessly with the surrounding oaks, dogwood trees and flourishing shrubs while the building's gothic-arched porch and series of peaked rooflines draw the eye skyward.
The interior is paneled entirely in redwood, much of it intricately carved. One of the church's most unusual features is the dramatic pyramid-shaped vault in the ceiling, whose leaded glass windows serve as skylights. Other design elements include rich, red carpeting covering the aisle and altar; wood and glass chandeliers, and twenty-four glass wall sconces.
The new Allen organ at Sausalito Presbyterian Church is a 2-manual instrument with 43 speaking stops. It replaces a small pipe organ which had been installed in the 1920's. Since a major feature of the churches ministry is music, organist Ralph Hooper, uses this extraordinary instrument to enhance the services by providing accompaniment for the congregation and the choir and by performing solo organ repertoire. SPC relishes diversity, unconventionality, and beauty in the repertoire of their choir and musicians. The versatility of the Allen organ provides very capable support to this eclectic music ministry.
